Tamil film industry has missed out on the Valentine day
weekend box-office. There was not even a single film in
the romance genre that made it to the theatres except Ji
which is an action film. Last year's big Valentine
winner was Cheran's Autograph which was a blockbuster
and there was also Bharathiraja's Kankalal Kaidhi Sei, a
love story.
What happened to all the romantic films which threatened
to release for Valentine weekend? Films like Karka
Kasandra, Kitcha Vayasu 16, Raam and Mayaavi were
scheduled for release but not even one candy floss love
story could cash in on the Valentine phenomenon.
The Valentine weekend when romantic films are released
was created only recently by the Tamil film industry to
cash on the Kathalar Dhinam brand. It has been proved
that romantic films released during this time of the
year can take a decent opening if they are marketed well.
The media, both print and cable has now coined special
Valentine day editions and done special programmes to
get the advertisements.
According to a recent survey done by a leading newspaper,
to a question on how the youngsters celebrate the
Valentine day? 38 percent of the generation next said
they would "go for a movie"! It is a pity that the Tamil
film producers did not cash in on the trend.
But Chennai's Satyam Cineplex, the up market theatre
complex is celebrating the day in a unique way. Sathyam
Cinemas is celebrating Valentine Day on Feb13 and 14th
with an interesting line up of special films, live music
performances by two popular bands, a carnival, a flower
boutique, caricature artists, Chocolate stalls, games,
and a graffiti board where you can express your views.
So those romantic people out there can head to Satyam
cinemas and enjoy.
